FISCHER ENGINEERING’S HISTORY AND SUCCESS: THE HIGHLIGHTS

Fischer Engineering’s current President and Owner, Dennis Fischer, founded his company in 1973 in Van Nuys, California. With the vision of perfecting his passion, Dennis grew Fischer Engineering from a one-man engine shop to one of the most successful independent engine suppliers in racing history.

From powering winners at the short tracks and road courses of California, it did not take long for Fischer’s success to spread throughout the national racing scene, earning its first Championship in the Trans-Am Series in 1983 and a second in 1986. By the late 1980’s Fischer had made a strong impression on many in the NASCAR Cup and Busch garages by successfully competing against top teams at the road course in Riverside, California.

With this success, Fischer Engineering was chosen to assist in the development of the Chevrolet and Buick V6 engine programs for the Busch and Trans-Am Series’. One Busch team that had the opportunity to run a Fischer development engine was that of seven-time NASCAR Cup Champion, Dale Earnhardt. Due to the parings on-track success, Earnhardt requested Fischer’s assistance in the development of Richard Childress Racing’s NASCAR Cup engine program. Throughout its partnership with RCR, Fischer provided the qualifying engines for Earnhardt’s 1986 and 1987 Cup Championships and also powered Earnhardt to his 1988 Budweiser Shootout victory – the first such race run with a restricted engine.

However, Fischer Engineering’s accomplishments in the mid–to–late 1980’s did not stop with its involvement in NASCAR. In addition to being one of only three engine companies that participated in building thirteen “spec” engines for the Busch Series, Fischer also participated in the development of thirteen “spec” engines for the American Indy Light Series. Because these projects were completed within budget, on time and with an outstanding degree of professionalism, Fischer Engineering was given the opportunity to assist with the Buick V6 Indy program. In 1988, Fischer Engineering built the first turbo-charged, stock-block Buick V6 engine to finish the Indianapolis 500, which distinguished itself by leading laps and ultimately earning a 6th place finish.

In the early 1990’s, Fischer Engineering returned to its roots, supplying engines to teams competing in the NASCAR Southwest, Grand National West and other NASCAR Weekly Racing Series’. Once again, it didn’t take long for Fischer to find success – powering driver Rick Carelli to a NASCAR Southwest Championship in 1991, Grand National West Rookie of the Year honors in 1992 and a Grand National West Championship in 1993.

In 1994, with the introduction of the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series, Fischer not only continued its success with Rick Carelli - winning the first exhibition Truck race held at Tucson Raceway Park – but was reunited with Dale Earnhardt, providing engines for the Truck Team he and his wife, Teresa, owned.

It didn’t take long for Fischer and Earnhardt to rekindle the success they had in the 1980’s. During the Craftsman Truck Series Inaugural Season in 1995 – Fischer powered Hornaday to four poles and six wins. In 1996 Fischer engines drove Hornaday to his first Craftsman Truck Series Championship resulting in the Earnhardt’s first Championship as car owners. Hornaday held the record for most laps completed and Fischer Engineering matched his success by supplying flawless power- having no engine failures the entire year.

As a result of its success in the Truck Series – Fischer began supplying engines for Earnhardt’s NASCAR Cup and Busch teams, which included drivers such as Jeff Green, Steve Park and Dale Earnhardt, Jr. Fischer also continued its success on the west coast – powering driver Lance Hooper to his 1995 Southwest Championship and 1996 Grand National West Championship and Rookie of the Year honor.

In 1997, Fischer Engineering relocated its entire operation to Mooresville, North Carolina, continuing its efforts in the NASCAR Cup, Busch and other NASCAR series’. During the 1998-2003 racing seasons, Fischer won races, poles and earned multiple top five and top ten finishes in the Busch Series with drivers such as Jimmie Johnson, Michael Waltrip, Adam Petty, Sterling Marlin, Jeff Green, Jason Keller, Todd Bodine and Mike McLaughlin, to name a few. In 1998 and 1999 Fischer provided engines to drivers Kevin Lepage, Todd and Geoffrey Bodine and Morgan Shepherd in the NASCAR Cup Series. Fischer Engineering also supplied engines to driver Ashton Lewis, Jr., finishing 7th in the Busch Series points in 2004 and MacHill Motorsports, competing part-time in the Busch Series in 2005 and 2006.

More recently, Fischer Engineering has enjoyed a great deal of success in the NASCAR Grand National Division, Busch East Series. In 2002, Fischer began supplying engines for Busch East Series driver Andy Santerre. Santerre not only won the Championship in 2002 – but he went on to win three more consecutive championships with Fischer power under the hood – setting a new Busch East Series record for the most championships won, consecutive or otherwise.

During the 2007 racing season, Fischer Engineering will be providing engines to teams in the NASCAR Busch Series, NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series, Grand National East and West Series’ and the USAR Hooters Pro Cup Series. Please visit our 2007 Customer page for more details.
